Synopsis
In 1930s Budapest, restaurant owner Laszlo brings in pianist András to serenade his patrons. Both men are smitten by the enchanting waitress Ilona, who inspires András to compose his haunting melody, “Gloomy Sunday.” Initially celebrated, the song soon evokes fear as its melancholic notes lead to a string of tragic suicides. The delicate love triangle shifts further when German newcomer Hans also falls for Ilona, upsetting their fragile balance.
